About Magnolias: Communion with Femininity. 2016-2018, oil on canvas
Traditionally, the role of women has been defined by expectations around values such as innocence and obedience. These expectations exclude indivisible aspects of femininity like sensuality, intuition, and power. A woman who does not meet the desired values is questioned. But, what happens when that question comes from herself? I am, like most women, many things that are not expected of a woman. I am not innocent, much less obedient. I enjoy sensuality and love power. Before my adulthood, I rejected or ridiculed traditional expectations of women. Just recently, I made communion with the feminine in me and understood that this internal force was also part of being a woman.
The Magnolias represent this acceptance and evoke duality of the feminine. The feminine exists and is powerful because of what is accepted and unaccepted. The Magnolias, like women, are fragile and strong, they are soft and sensual, they are desirable but can feel unattainable.
